Now that Verizon has put up a new tower in my area and I have full strength on AT&T and Verizon, I thought it might be interesting to compare the 3G speed of both networks. ; Check out the video for all the details.
See how Clear WiMAX compares to these 3G services (Clear WiMAX)
Looks pretty even. I recently switched from a 3GS to the Droid X and found that even though the download speeds are lower on Verizon, the real world surfing seems just as fast.
On a completely unrelated note – I have a very anal nit to pick. When you said “AT&T verse Verizon” at 1:08 in the video. The proper term is “versus” usually abbreviated as vs.
It’s just one of my many pet peeves.
I like your videos and your even-handed approach to your tests and comparisons. Keep up the good work.
By the way, I just ran several speed tests and got as high as 2196 kbps down and 859 kbps up. The low points were 1298 kbps down and 844 kbps up. For the most part, the download speeds were around 1900 kbps and the uploads were around 850 kbps.
The FCC Mobile Broadband Test showed slightly lower speeds.
These tests were run setting at my desk at work in a large, metal-reinforced concrete block and brick structure in a rural area. Not the best location for fast wireless connections.
yeah, sounds about right.
I’ve had similar results on my iPhone no AT&T but location does matter. When I’m at my office, the speed is about what you see on your video – when I’m at home (outskirts of the city) then the speed is not quite as good. I’m assuming that Verizon has similar issues. Of course, where AT&T is fast, I would assume that Verizon would also be close to as fast. Either way, the results you’ve documented here are also in line with friends that I have on Verizon. While Verizon might have more 3G coverage, the performance is not as good as AT&T in general.
I was stalling on twitter trying to find something to cure my boredom – and BLAM – someone I follow tweeted this post. Now, I am not quite as bored. Thanks for posting awesome material. – Frisbee
I’m a former AT&T customer that switched to Verizon primarily because I was getting way too many dropped calls. I have been with Verizon for about a year and a half using a Motorola Droid (original). I’ve not had a drop call since. So…who cares about download speed (AT&T) if you can’t even talk without being dropped? It is afterall, a phone we are using, right?
