While push was part of the current promise to iPhone users, it never really worked well at all.  Today they have announced they have fxed the issue in 3.0 and even mentioned that they are looking at background process running, but not ready to let us have it just yet.  The performance seems to be cited as the reason and that means we all have to wait.  We will however get the push service to apps that they talked about some time ago now.  This allows instant messaging apps to get incoming messages without running in the background and is the interim fix for now.
