The rumor of an 8GB iPhpne 3GS has been around for some time.  This rumor comes courtesy of a German Forum called apfeltalk.  A semi-lucky forum contributor by the name of David had ordered an 8GB iPhone 3G.  What he received was a box showing an 8GB iPhone 3GS, but he actually was shipped the 3G he had ordered.  He was able to easily tell this was a 3G and not a 3GS, by its lack of the compass and video capability.

The rumor seems genuine as we know a new iPhone will be coming on the normal yearly cycle that Apple has been using for refreshes.  We can only believe that when a new iPhone is introduced we will see an iPhone 3GS for $99 and the 8GB size will most likely fit the bill.  Why the box was sent by mistake could be an indication of an iPhone refresh coming earlier than expected or possibly just another European iPhone variant.  Only time will tell and maybe we’ll learn something at the end of January Apple event.
