Microsoft Spending $8 Billion to Play Catchup in the Cloud

  

  Microsoft announced today that it is spending $8 Billion on R&D to be the best there is in cloud computing.  The recent availability of cloud storage and sync via Live Mesh is just the start of what Microsoft has planned.  It appears that Microsoft has really started to understand that the future of the where files and data is stored seems to be changing.  Google has had their focus on cloud computing and Microsoft wants a bigger piece of the pie.

Zune 3.0 Coming This Fall

  

  Microsoft just published its official press release about the new Zune’s and the update coming this fall.  The new update allows you to buy music directly from the FM radio built in every Zune.  The new Zune software will create custom channels for each user, based on favorite artists and genres and also learns what you like and provides suggestions and playlists for the user.  The last and most important to Zune users should be they will finally support Audible audio books.  This is good news for the few that have them and adds some interesting features that could be the deciding factor over an iPod, at least for some.

AOL Releases New Client For Mac, Browser Included

  

  As if we did not have enough browser news last week, AOL has released a beta client for the Mac.  The release includes the typical AOL browser with links at the top for music, videos, etc and includes its AIM client.  The program was designed from the ground up for mac and does a nice job of looking Mac-like, but is not something for the typical Mac user.  The browser is slow and the buttons unnecessary for what most want.
